After seeing the dramatic improvements in the Mustang and Mustang GT, it should come as no surprise that the 2011 Ford SVT Shelby GT500 would receive similar improvements. Lighter, faster, stronger is a key concept in any sports car and the 2011 SVT Shelby GT500 is no exception.
The big news is again in the engine. An all-aluminum 5.4L DOHC engine heavily derived from the Ford GT now sits between the strut towers. The new engine utilizes a plasma-arc spray bore technology that enables the block to be run without cast iron cylinder liners. The process involves heating a steel rod to over 35,000 degrees and then spraying the mist onto the block's cylinder walls to form a coating that is 150 microns thick. The result is a cylinder wall that produces less friction and wear and has greater cooling capacity without the need for a thermally disparate iron cylinder sleeve.

On the outside and inside, the 2011 Mustang is largely a carry over from the 2010 Model Year; however, in addition to major powerplant and transmission upgrades there is another bonus. The 2011 Mustang GT gets the 2010 Track-Pack suspension which includes parts from the 2010 Ford Mustang Shelby GT-500 and the 2008 Mustang Bullitt:
- Lower rear control arms
- Front anti-sway bars
- Rear anti-sway bars
- Shocks / Struts
- Springs
- More aggressive front and rear brake pads

For 18 years we have been waiting for the 2011 Ford Mustang GT, because now Team Mustang has finally delivered the undisputed king of the pony cars. Certainly the GT-500 could be considered the ruler of this domain; however, its continually bloating price point has moved it beyond what a true pony car should be – affordable performance that everyone can enjoy.
Enthusiasts have continually put horsepower on their wish list, but until now they have been sorely disappointed. Now the 2011 Ford Mustang GT delivers the horsepower demands have finally been met!
For the most part the 2011 Mustang GT is a carryover from the 2010 model year with the exception of three notable areas: engine, transmission and brakes. These three components comprise the nucleus of the story. It will be easiest to start from the back of the drivetrain and work forward.

An initial inspection of the vehicle at the 2009 LA Auto Show reveals a car that seems poised to snatch the police market from Ford and this prediction may indeed come to fruition if the rumors of Ford’s intention to use the Ford Taurus are true.

Magazines throughout the history of the automobile have sung praises to BMW’s rolling engineering marvels. Uncompromising performance, technological innovation, and the driving soul that is unique to BMW, is painstakingly crafted into each of their cars. Not only has BMW mastered the infusion of these elements into their traditional product line, but they were one of the original pioneers of the factory “tuner” car with the development of their “M” series cars.
But is it possible to take the essence of what makes a car an M and apply it to their Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) line? In the heart of South Carolina, American workers will assemble just such a vehicle: the BMW X6 M.
